기독교 철학자이며 칼빈주의 신학자로서 특히 인식론, 전제주의 변증학, 조직신학, 윤리학을 주로 연구하였다. 그는 코넬리우스 반틸(Cornelius Van Til)의 사상을 가장 탁월하게 계승한 사람 중 하나로 평가받는다.

프린스턴대학교(A.B.), 웨스트민스터신학교(B.D.), 예일대학교(M.A., M.Phil.)에서 공부했고, 벨헤이븐대학에서 명예 신학박사 학위를 받았다(D.D.). 웨스트민스터신학교와 리폼드신학교에서 가르쳤다.

대표적인 저서로는 “주권신학 시리즈”(Theology of Lordship series) 4권, 즉 『신지식론』(The Doctrine of the Knowledge of God, 1987, PNR[개혁주의신학사] 역간), 『신론』(The Doctrine of God, 2002, PNR 역간), 『기독교 윤리학』(The Doctrine of the Christian Life, 2008, PNR 역간), 『성경론』(The Doctrine of the Word of God, 2010, PNR 역간)이 있다. 그 외에 『열린 신학 논쟁』(No Other God: A Response to Open Theism, 2001, PNR 역간), 『조직신학개론』(Salvation Belongs To The Lord: An Introduction To Systematic Theology, 2006, PNR 역간), 『존 프레임의 조직신학』(Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Christian Belief, 2013), 『서양 철학과 신학의 역사』(A History of Western Philosophy and Theology, 2015) 등 다수의 작품이 있다.
