현재 뉴욕 시립대학교 헨리 시마트(Henry Semat) 석좌 교수인 미치오 카쿠는 끈이론, 우주론 등에서 뛰어난 업적을 남긴 이론물리학계의 세계적 석학이다. 또한 숨가쁜 변혁을 겪고 있는 현대 우주를 거대한 지식과 빛나는 통찰력, 번뜩이는 논증으로 밝힌 『평행우주』를 집필한 저명한 과학 저술가이다. 그 외에도 「뉴욕타임스」와 「워싱턴포스트」의 ‘올해의 베스트셀러’로 선정된 『비전』과 『아인슈타인을 넘어서』, 『초공간』등 출간하는 책마다 과학사를 빛낼 걸작이라는 찬사를 받고 있다.

1947년 미국 캘리포니아에서 일본계 미국인으로 태어나 하버드대학교를 숨마쿰라데(최우수등급)로 졸업하고, UC버클리에서 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 국제라디오 과학 프로그램을 진두지휘하고, [나이트라인], [60분], [굿모닝 아메리카], [래리 킹 라이브] 등 TV 프로그램에 출연하여 과학의 대중화를 위해 활약하고 있다.
