미국의 대표적인 논픽션 전문 작가다. 펜실베이니아 대학에서 러시아 역사로 학사 학위를, 컬럼비아 대학에서 저널리즘으로 석사 학위를 받았다. 샌프란시스코 주립대학과 존스홉킨스 작문 세미나, 오리건 대학 등에서 논픽션 작문을 가르쳤고 전 세계 청중을 대상으로 강의했다.

저서 『이삭의 폭풍(Isaac’ Storm)』을 비롯하여 『화이트 시티』, 『데드 웨이크(Dead Wake)』, 『야수의 정원에서(In the Garden of Beasts)』 등이 1,000만 부 이상의 판매를 기록하며 세계적인 베스트셀러 반열에 올랐다.『화이트 시티』는 2004년에 에드거상(미국 추리작가협회상)을 수상했고 2003년 전미도서상 최종 후보, CWA(영국추리작가협회상) 골드대거상 최종 후보에 올랐다. 『폭격기의 달이 뜨면1: 940 런던 공습, 전격하는 히틀러와 처칠의 도전』과 『데드 웨이크』는 출간되자마자 1위를 차지했다. 그의 책은 20개국에서 출간되었으며, 『야수의 정원에서』는 톰 행크스 주연 영화로 제작 중이다.
