미국의 저널리스트이다. 다니던 중학교에서 최초로 《타임》을 읽은 학생이었고, 《플레이보이》에는 눈길조차 주지 않았던, 지적으로 일찍 깨인 한 남자. 그는 중학교 때 조그마한 인쇄기를 구입해서 주간신문을 발행했으며, 고등학교 때는 학교신문사 편집장으로, 대학교 신문사에서는 편집국장으로 활동했다. 대학 졸업을 앞두고는 절친한 친구와 함께 쓴 ‘아이비리그 남자와의 데이트’에 관한 가이드북 《남자들이 있는 곳Where the Boys Are》이 베스트셀러가 되었다. 이를 계기로 《뉴욕타임스》의 주목을 받고 〈투데이쇼〉와 〈투나잇쇼〉에 같은 날 출연, 처음으로 언론의 스포트라이트를 받았다.

언젠가 국무장관이나 대통령 혹은 유엔 총장이 될 것이라고 상상했지만 대통령이 되는 것보다 대통령을 인터뷰할 가능성이 더 높다는 사실을 깨달을 무렵, 저널리스트라는 일을 숙명처럼 받아들이게 되었다. 1995년 를 시작으로 지금까지 다양한 매체에 아시아 정치 및 언론에 관한 칼럼을 기고했으며, 1994년부터 2008년까지 UCLA 부교수로 재직하면서 아시아에 대한 대학생들의 지속적인 관심을 이끌어내는 데 일조하는 한편, 미국 내에서 아시아가 중요한 정치외교적 어젠다로 자리매김하도록 노력해왔다. 그동안 《뉴스데이》, 《뉴욕》, 《타임》, 《로스앤젤레스 타임스》 등 미국·영국의 유명 언론사의 논설위원과 편집장을 지내면서 김영삼 대통령, 로널드 레이건 대통령, 빌 클린턴 대통령, 조지 부시 대통령, 토니 블레어 총리, 고이즈미 총리 등 각국의 수상과 단독 인터뷰를 수차례 진행했다.

독특한 시각과 예리한 비평, 그리고 아시아에 대한 남다른 애정 덕에 그의 칼럼은 두바이에서 싱가포르, 타이베이, 홍콩, 서울, 도쿄, 시애틀, 샌디에이고에 이르기까지 수많은 도시의 신문에 격주마다 실리고 있다. 미국 신문 편집인 협회, 캘리포니아 신문 발행인 협회, 로스앤젤레스 언론 클럽 상을 비롯해 많은 상을 받았다. 그가 강의하는 대학에는 교토대학, United Emirates University, 스탠퍼드대학 등이 포함되어 있다. 그는 현재 로스앤젤레스에 있는 Loyola Marymount University에서 아시아 태평양학으로 저명한 학자이다. 교토대학교, 스탠퍼드대학교, 미군 태평양사령부 등의 학교 및 주요 기관에서 아시아와 미국의 관계에 대해 강연하고 있으며, 정치문화적 배경을 뛰어넘는 언론인 연대를 표방하는 ‘아시아-태평양 언론 네트워크’를 설립해 운영하고 있다.

Professor Tom Plate is an experienced writer, award-winning U.S. journalist and syndicated columnist. He is the author of eight nonfiction books and has lectured at major institutions of higher learning in Asia and America, including Kyoto University, United Arab Emirates University (where he is a Visiting Professor) and Stanford University (as a Media Fellow). He is currently Distinguished Scholar of Asian and Pacific Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

At the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA, 1994-2008), he pioneered courses on the politics and media of Asia. Today he is the Distinguished Scholar of Asian and Pacific Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Plate’s newspaper journalism about Asia was launched on the op-ed pages of the Los Angeles Times and later reconstituted for international syndicationin other world newspapers, making it America’s longest running op-ed column on Asia and America. A career journalist who has held high-level editorial positions at the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Time magazine, New York magazine, and CBS,he has been honored by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Greater Los Angeles Press Club and the California Newspaper Publishers Association. He is a member of the Century Association of New York and the Princeton Club of New York and was educated at Amherst College and Princeton University.
