런던대학 동양 아프리카스쿨(SOAS) 역사학과 교수로 아프리카 현대사와 정치를 가르치고 있다. 지은 책으로 Warfare in African History(2012), Frontiers of Violence in Northeast Africa(2011), War in Pre-Colonial Eastern Africa(2007), Political Power in Pre-Colonial Buganda: Economy, Society and Warfare in the Nineteenth Century(2002)가 있고, The Oxford Handbook of Modern African History(2013)를 편집했다.
한국에 번역된 도서로는 『현대 아프리카의 역사』가 있다.
