미국 스탠포드대학 졸업 후 UC 버클리대학에서 석사학위, 스탠포드대학에서 종교학으로 박사학위를 받았다. 지금은 캐나다의 브리티시컬럼비아대학교(University of British Columbia) 아시아학과의 교수로 재직 중이다. 그는 전국시대(B.C. 5-3세기)의 중국 사상과 종교학뿐 아니라 개념적 혼성 이론과 개념적 은유 이론을 중심으로 한 인지언어학, 윤리학, 진화심리학, 인문학과 자연과학의 통섭에 관심을 두고 연구하고 있다.

저서로는 《Confucius Analects: With Selections from Traditional Commentaries》(2003), 《Effortless Action: Wu-wei as Conceptual Metaphor and Spiritual Ideal in Early China》(2007), 《What Science Offers the Humanities: Integrating Body and Culture》(2008), 《Trying Not to Try: Ancient China, Modern Science and the Power of Spontaneity》(2014), 《Mind and Body in Early China: Embodied Cognition, Orientalism and the Myth of Holism》(2018)이 있으며, 마크 콜라드 박사와 함께 《Creating Consilience: Integrating the Sciences and the Humanities》(2012)도 엮었다.
