네덜란드계 미국인으로 1946년부터 미국에서 정신 의학 분야에서 일했다. 옥스퍼드 대학과 암스테르담 의과 대학에서 수학했다. 저서로 「Feeling and Healing Your Emotions」, 「I Will Give Them a New Heart: Reflections on the Priesthood and the Renewal of the Church」 등이 있다. 「Doctor of the Heart」는 바스 박사의 자서전으로, 부헨발트 강제 수용소에서의 경험이 상세히 담겨 있다.
