성 올라프 대학(St. Olaf College, B. A.)과 루터 신학교(Luther Seminary, B. D.)를 거쳐 예일 대학교(Yale University)에서 박사학위(Ph. D.)를 취득했다. 인디애나 대학교(Indiana University)와 루터 신학교에서 신약학 교수로 재직했으며, 1995년부터 2003년 하나님의 부름을 받을 때까지 프린스턴 신학교(Princeton Theological Seminary)에서 ‘리처드 디어본 석좌교수’(Richard J. Dearborn Professor)로서 신약학을 가르쳤다. 저서로는 Messiah and Temple: The Trial of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark(1977), Augsburg Commentary on the New Testament Mark(2000), A Master of Surprise(2002) 등이 있다.
