1952년 미국 캘리포니아 코비나에서 태어났다. 레바논의 베이루트 아메리칸 대학교(BA)에서 국제 정치와 이슬람을 공부했고, 미국 풀러 신학교(MDiv), 스코틀랜드 애버딘 대학교(PhD)에서 신학을 공부했다. 휘튼 칼리지에서 1992년부터 25년간 신약을 가르쳤고 2017년부터 캘빈 신학교에서 신약학 교수 및 학과장으로 일하고 있다. 신약과 중동에 관한 연구 및 저술 활동을 활발히 하고 있으며, 중동, 아프리카, 유럽 등에서도 강연하고 있다.

지은 책으로 『NIV 적용주석 요한복음』(솔로몬), Who Are God’s People in the Middle East?, Whose Land? Whose Promise?, Interpreting the Gospel of John, Commentary on the Letters of John, Commentary on the Fourth Gospel, The Bible and the Land, Encounters with Jesus, Jesus and the Jewish Festivals, Theological Questions Everyone Asks, A Week on the Life of a Roman Centurion 등이 있다.
