Queen's University(Belfast)에서 학사학위(B.A.)를 마친 후, University of St. Andrews에서 박사학위(Ph.D.)를 취득했다. 2012년부터 Dean of Harvard Divinity School로 섬기면서 교회사 교수로 봉직하고 있다. 저서로는 Methodism: Empire of the Spirit (Yale, 2005), The Church in the Long Eighteenth Century (Tauris, 2011), Secularization and Religious Innovation in the North Atlantic World (Oxford, 2017) 등이 있다.
