일본 도쿄대학 경제학부를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 경제학 석사와 박사학위를 취득했다. 도쿄대학 사회과학연구소 조수를 거쳐 현재는 도쿄대학교 경제학부 교수로 재직 중이다. 2015년부터 현재까지 국제경제사학회(IEHA) 회장을 맡고 있다. 경제사·역사비교제도분석 분야의 저명한 학자 중 한 사람이며, 주요 저서로는 1993년도에 ‘산토리 학예상’을 수상한 『일본의 공업화와 철강산업』(東京大學出版會) 외에 다수가 있다.
