새뮤얼 킴은 컬럼비아대학교 정치학과 겸임교수이자 웨더헤드 동아시아 연구소의 수석 연구학자이다. 1985~1986년 풀브라이트 교수로서 중국 베이징의 외교문제 연구소에서 강의했고, 1986~1993년에는 프린스턴대학교 공공국제정책대학원인 우드로윌슨 스쿨에서 강의했다. 그는 동아시아 국제관계 및 세계질서 연구에 관한 책 22권의 저자이자 편집자이다.
저서로는 China, the United Nations and World Order(1979), The Quest for a Just World Order(1984), China and the World(ed., 1984, 1989, 1994, 1998), North Korean Foreign Relations in the Post?Cold War Era(ed., 1998), Korea’s Globalization(ed., 2000), East Asia and Globalization(ed., 2000), The International Relations of Northeast Asia(ed., 2004) 등이 있다. 또한 American Journal of International Law, Asian Perspective, Asian Survey, China Quarterly, International Interactions, International Organization, Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Peace Research, World Policy Journal, World Politics를 포함한 국제관계 저널에 150편 이상의 논문을 발표한 바 있다.
