1950년에 태어나 옥스퍼드대학에서 불교철학으로 학위를 받았다. 브리스톨대학의 인도 티베트철학의 교수이자 불교연구소의 공동책임자를 역임하였다. 영국 불교학회의 전임회장이다.
저서로는 『The Reflexive Nature of Awareness: A Tibetan Madhyamaka Defence』 (1998), 『Altruism and Reality: Studies in the Philosophy of the Bodhicaryavatara』 (1998), 『Buddhist Thought: A Complete Introduction to the Indian Tradition』 (2000; 2011, 공저), 『The Unexpected Way: On Converting from Buddhism to Catholicism』 (2002), 『Songs of Love, Poems of Sadness: The Erotic Verse of the 6th Dalai Lama』 (2004) 등이 있다.
