푸드 퍼스트(Food First)/먹을거리와 개발정책 연구소 소장이다. 캘리포니아대학교(샌타크루즈)에서 환경연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 농업생태학자로 20년 넘게 멕시코와 중앙아메리카의 농민운동을 연구하며 그들과 함께 일했다. 캘리포니아대학교, 보스턴대학교, 이탈리아 국제미식학대학교 등 여러 대학에서 개발학과 먹을거리 주권 및 먹을거리 정의에 대해 강의했다. Campesino a Campesino: Voices from Latin America’s Farmer to Farmer Movement for Sustainable Agriculture(2006), Food Rebellions! Crisis and the Hunger for Justice(2009, 공저), Can We Feed the World Without Destroying It?(2019) 등의 책을 썼고, Land Justice: Reimagining Land, Food and the Commons in the United States(2017), Food Movements Unite! Strategies to Transform Our Food Systems(2011) 등의 책을 편집했다.
