Sem Vermeersch
Sem Vermeersch is an associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies, Seoul National University. He graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, with a dissertation on the Buddhist administration of the Kory? Dynasty. This was later published as The Power of the Buddhas: The Politics of Buddhism During the Kory? Dynasty (918?1392) . The history of pre-modern Korean Buddhism has remained the main focus of his research, and he has published numerous articles and chapters on various aspects of the intersection of Buddhism, society, and politics in Korea. He has also translated an important Chinese record of Kory? society, the Gaoli tujing, as A Chinese Traveler in Medieval Korea: Xu Jing’s Illustrated Account of the Xuanhe Embassy to Kory?. Currently he is also editing the Kory? volume of the Cambridge History of Korea.
