전 라이덴대학 교수. 독일 계통의 네델란드 학자로서 인도학과 불교학을 전공하였다. 주요 저서로 Erkenntnisprobleme bei Dharmakirti, Studien Zur Lehre Und Entwicklung Sankaras, The Khandha Passages in the Vinayapitaka and the Four Main Nikayas 등이 있다.
