조지아 대학교 역사학 특훈연구교수(Distinguished Research Professor)이다. 1995년 예일 대학교에서 역사학 박사 학위를 받았다. 주요 관심사는 횡문화정신의학, 재산의 기원과 역사, 소규모 평등 사회의 역사 등이다. 지은 책으로 《의학의 왕자: 로마 제국의 갈레노스, 그리고 로마와 그 적(The Prince of Medicine: Galen in the Roman Empire and Rome and the Enemy)》 《갈레노스와 치유의 수사학(Galen and the Rhetoric of Healing)》 《석기 시대부터 기원후 600년까지 고대 지중해 세계(The Ancient Mediterranean World from the Stone Age to A.D. 600)》 《로마와 그 적: 원수정의 제국 전략(Rome and the Enemy: Imperial Strategy in the Principate)》 등이 있다.
