1947년 미국 출생. 미국 블랙힐스(Black Hills)주립대학(학사, 미국문학), 캐나다 맥마스터(McMaster)대학(석사, 종교사), 호주국립대학(남아시아·불교학)에서 학위를 취득하였다. 미시간대학, 워싱턴대학, 텍사스(오스틴)대학, 캘리포니아(로스앤젤레스)대학, 스탠포드대학의 교수를 지냈으며, 전공은 범어·티베트어, 불교학이다.
