호주 멜버른 출생이며 미국 스텐퍼드대학교 현대사상과 문학 박사과정(입학)을 거쳤고 북한 김일성종합대학 문학대학 박사원 현대조선문학 석사과정(전)을 수료했다. 한국 서강대학교 교환학생이기도 했다. 주요 연구로는 “Love of the lover, love of the Leader: youth romance in North Korean fiction,” 『Routledge Handbook of Contemporary North Korea』, “Sojourn in Paradise: The Experiences of Foreign Students in North Korea”(2021) 등이 있다.
