미국 펜실베니아주립대학 종교학부의 교수로 35년간 봉직하며 100여 편의 학술논문과 20여 권의 저서(공저, 편역서 포함)를 집필했다. 2007년부터 2010년까지 유타주립대학교(Utah State Univ.) 찰스리드 센터(The Charles Redd) 종교학부의 첫 번째 석좌교수를 역임하면서 종교학 연구 프로그램들을 주도했다. 현재는 펜실베니아주립대학의 명예교수이자 유타주립대학의 명예석좌교수다. 국제불교학회(the International Association of Buddhist Studies)의 간사를 역임했고, 미국 학술원의 불교 분과(the Buddhism Section of the American Academy)의 공동 창설자이다.

저서로는 불교학의 고전적 저작으로 꼽히는 《Buddhist Monastic Discipline》(1975)과 《Luminous Passage: The Practice and Study of Buddhism in America》(Univ.of California Press, 1999)를 비롯하여, 《American Buddhism》(Univ. of California Press, 1979), 《Religion and Sport: The Meeting of Sacred and Profane》(1993),《A Survey of Vinaya Literature》(Routledge, 1994), 《Historical Dictionary of Buddhism》(Scarecrow, 1993), 《Buddhism: The American Experience》(Journal of Buddhist Ethics Online Books, 2003), 《The A to Z of Buddhism》(Wisdombooks,2014), 《An American Buddhist Life: Memories of a Modern Dharma Pioneer》(Sumeru Press, 2011)가 있으며, 공동 편역서로 《Buddhism; a Modern Perspective》(PennState, 1975), 《The Faces of Buddhism in America》(Univ. of California Press,1998), 《Buddhism and Human Rights)》(Curzon, 1998)와 《Introducing Buddhism》(Routeledge, 2006)이 있다.

프레비쉬 박사는 서양 불교 연구를 불교학의 한 분야로 자리잡게 하는 데 선도적인 역할을 하였다. 불교학 분야에서는 최초로 온라인 논문심사지(peer-reviewed journal)인 〈Journal of Buddhist Ethics〉와 〈Journal of Global Buddhism〉의 공동 편집자로서 발행을 주도했다. 1996년에는 루트리지(Routledge) 출판사와 ‘불교-비판적 연구(Critical Studies in Buddhism)’ 시리즈를 공동 기획하였다. 퇴임 후에도 초기의 인도불교와 서구에서의 불교에 관해 활발하게 논문과 저서를 집필하고 있다.
