교육학 박사. 근현대 비교교육사 전공으로 공교육 형성과 발달에 관심을 가지고 있다. 주요 논저로 『한국의 근대와 교육: 서구적 근대성을 넘어』(문음사, 2006), 『Modern education, textbooks and the image of the nation: politics of modernization and nationalism in Korean education, 1880-1910』(Garland, 2000) 등이 있다.
