영국 브리스톨대학교 명예교수로서 전공은 근대철학(Early Modern Philosophy)이다. 그는 브리스톨대학에서 <원자론과 그것에 대한 비판: 데모크리토스에서 뉴턴까지(Atomism and its Critics: Democritus to Newton)>로 박사학위를 받았다. 그가 관심을 갖고 연구를 해온 전공은 두 분야로서 하나는 과학사이고, 다른 하나는 17-8세기 형이상학과 인식론이다. 그는 현재 the British Journal for the History of Philosophy의 편집위원이자 영국 철학 백과사전의 편찬위원이기도 하다. 주요 저작은 다음과 같다.
