Princeton University, California University, Pittsburgh University에서 종교 및 역사학을 가르쳤으며, 이후 20여 년 동안 Boston University에서 William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of the Appreciation of Scripture였고, 현재는 William Goodwin Aurelio Chair Emerita of the Appreciation of Scripture이자, Hebrew University에서 Distinguished Visiting Professor of Comparative Religion이다. 저서로는 Augustine on Romans (1982), From Jesus to Christ (1988; 2000), 그리고 National Jewish Book Award를 수상한 Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews (1999)가 있다. 보다 최근의 저서로는 Augustine and the Jews: A Christian Defense of Jews and Judaism (2010), Sin: The Early History of an Idea (2012)가 있다.
