서울대학교에서 교육학(주전공)과 철학(부전공)을 공부하며 학부 과정을 보낸 뒤, 교육인류학 전공으로 석사 학위를 취득했다. 이후 뉴욕주립대-버팔로 대학에서 “Educational Culture, Policy, and Society” 프로그램으로 박사 학위를 취득했으며, 박사 학위 졸업 논문인 「Class struggle within the middle-class: Academic competition for selective college admissions among Korean ‘early study abroad’ students in the globalized arena」로 ‘UB Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creativity Award’를 수상했다.

박사 졸업 이후 1년간 뉴욕주립대-버팔로 대학에서 연구원으로 근무했고, 이화여자대학교 미래교육연구소에서 연구교수로 근무하며 서울대학교, 서울시립대학교, 이화여자대학교 등에서 강의하고 있다. 대표 논문으로 「Market-based parental involvement: Impact of networks of middle-class mothers in the education marketplace」, 「Complexifying Asian American student pathways to STEM majors: Differences by ethnic subgroups and college selectivity」 등이 있다.
