김단비 작가는 북한에서 태어나 어릴 때는 부족함 없이 자랐으나, 고난의 행군 이후 먹을 음식이 없어 감자껍질을 먹으며 어렵게 생계를 이어 나갔다. 아버지가 돌아가시면서 가족의 생계를 돕기 위해 중국에 돈을 벌러 떠났으나, 중국에 거주하는 것이 발각되어 북송되었다. 그러나 가족을 끝까지 지키겠다는 일념으로 다시 탈북하여 대한민국에서 살게 되었다. 대한민국에서는 사기를 당하는 등 또 다른 위기를 겪기도 하였다. 김단비 작가는 많은 역경에도 절망하지 않고 희망을 가지고 삶을 개척해 나갔다. 현재는 미국에서 가족과 함께 행복한 나날을 보내고 있으며, 많은 사람에게 자신의 이야기를 전해 희망을 선물하고자 한다.

Kim Dan-bi was born in North Korea and grew up without difficulties when she was young, but she started struggling after the march of hardship. She had to eat potato peel to survive. Since her father passed away, she left for China to make money to help her family's living, but was sent back to North Korea. However, with the determination to protect his family to the end, she defected again and started living in South Korea. In South Korea she also experienced another crisis, such as being swindled. Writer Kim Dan-bi did not despair despite many hardships and pioneered life with hope. Currently she is enjoying happy life with her family in the United States, and wants to represent hope by sharing her story.
