서울대학교 국민윤리교육과와 동 대학원을 졸업하고, 미국 미주리 주립대학교(University of Missouri-Columbia) 철학과에서 철학 석사 및 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 전남대학교 사범대학 윤리교육과 교수로 재직하고 있다.

주요 저서로 『도덕성의 합리적 이해』(철학과현실사, 2002). 『덕윤리의 비판적 조명』(철학과현실사, 2009), 『덕윤리의 도덕심리학적 고찰』(철학과현실사, 2015)이 있고, 논문으로는 「정보윤리에서 책임의 성격과 유형」, 「시민성과 시민윤리」, 「롤즈 이후의 칸트적 구성주의」, 「Christine M. Korsgaard의 구성주의와 도덕적 실재론」, “Is the Disposition of Constrained Maximization Chosen Rationally?”, “Values Education in the Global, Information Age in South Korea and Singapore”, “An Extended Conception of Rationality and Moral Actions”, “Beyond the Cognitive and the Virtue Approaches to Moral Education” 등이 있다.
