매사추세츠 대학교의 철학과 교수이다. 이전에는 켄터키 대학교, 오하이오 대학교, 노스웨스턴 대학교의 교수를 지냈다. 민주주의, 법, 인정, 분배, 비판이론에 관한 많은 논문을 발표해 왔으며, 이 책 외에도 저서로 Deliberative Democracy and the Institution of Judicial Review와 Splitsville USA: A Democratic Argument for Breaking Up the United States가 있고, The Philosophy of Recognition: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives와 New Waves in Political Philosophy를 공동으로 편집했다.
