교육과정 통합을 연구하는 분야에서 탁월한 철학을 세운 학자다. 한때 학교 교사였고, 학교 코치로도 일했다. 이런 경험을 바탕으로 이후 National-Louis University (US) Curriculum and Instruction 학과 소속의 교수로 재직하다가 은퇴했다. 그동안 『Curriculum Integration: Designing the Core of Democratic Education』(Teachers College Press, 1997), 『A Reason to Teach: Creating Classrooms of Dignity and Hope』(Heinemann, 2005) 등 여러 책을 저술했고, 절친한 동료인 Michael W. Apple과 『민주주의 학교』(Heinemann, 2007) 등을 공동 집필했다.
