역사학자. 영국 킹스칼리지런던(King’s College London) 중세사학과 학과장이다. 제정 후기 로마와 중세 초기 역사의 최고 권위자로 알려져 있다. 지은 책으로 『로마 제국의 멸망(The Fall of the Roman Empire)』, 『제국과 야만족(Empires and Barbarians)』, 『로마의 재건(The Restoration of Rome)』, 『로마의 부활(Rome Resurgent)』 등이 있다.
