브라운 대학의 역사와 미국 문명 학부 부교수다. 1967년 민주사회학생연합the Students for a Democratic Society을 위해, 워블리풍의 신좌파 잡지 《래디컬 아메리카Radical America》를 만들었다. 또 C. L. R. 제임스의 평전을 써서 널리 인정받았고 《미국좌파 백과사전Encyclopedia of the American Left》의 공동 편집자다.
