스물여덟 살에 싱글맘이 되어 생계를 유지하기 위해 가사도우미 일을 시작하게 된다. 6년 동안의 가사도우미 생활 끝에 스테퍼니는 몬태나 주립대학교 문예창작학과에 입학해 학사 학위를 취득하고 자신의 경험을 토대로 허핑턴포스트, 뉴욕타임스, 워싱턴포스트, 가디언 등에 칼럼을 기고했다. 현재 경제적 불평등을 개선하기 위한 공공언론단체인 이코노믹 하드십 리포팅 프로젝트의 회원으로 활동하며 자신과 같은 상황에 놓인 싱글맘을 위해 활발히 목소리를 내고 있다.
