이 시집이 찬사를 받은 이유 중의 하나는 뉴잉글랜드 지방의 구어 및 방언의 사용에 있어서 새로운 절정에 다다랐기 때문이다. 프로스트의 시에 등장하는 인물과 언어는 뉴잉글랜드 산골의 농장과 산림이라는 무대에 한정되어 있지만 그 무대에서 펼쳐지는 삶의 드라마는 지역을 뛰어넘어 보편적이다. 그가 그리는 최고의 그림들은 모질고 끔찍한 사건들로 구성되어 있으며,그의 시는 전체적으로 쇠퇴하고 퇴보하는 뉴잉글랜드, 즉 현대 문명의 충충한 조각들을 이어붙인 콜라보이기에 한층 아름답다. 시인 프로스트는 그의 나이 49세에 마침내 정점에 이르렀다.

본래 “A Poem with Notes and Grace Notes”라는 부제를 붙인 이 시집은 3부로 구성되었다. 1부에 표제시title poem로 「뉴햄프셔」를 배치하고,“Notes”라 불리는 2부에는 「석재 썰매에 실린 별」로부터 「“하나 One!”를 노래하련다」까지 14편, 그리고 “Grace Notes”라 불리는 3부에는 「쪼가리 파란색」부터 「시골의 사물에 정통할 필요」까지 30편의 짧은 시들로 구성된다. 1부 「뉴햄프셔」는 프로스트의 가장 긴 시로 프로스트 나름의 시론詩論을 익살스럽지만 설득력 있게 펼친다. 2부의 시들은 대부분 설화시說話詩로 『보스턴 북쪽』의 대부분의 설화시보다 철학적 사유가 더 깊다. 설화시 가운데는 「코어스의 마녀」, 「둘이 둘을 바라보다」가 가장 인기 있지만, 「도낏자루」, 「그래프턴의 극빈 마녀」는 비평가들의 높은 평가를 받는다.
3부의 시들은 대부분 서정시다. 서정시 가운데는 「눈 내리는 저녁 숲가에 서서」를 비롯해서 「습격」, 「불과 얼음」, 「금빛인 것은 머물 수 없다」, 「땅을 품고프다」,「시골의 사물에 정통할 필요」 등 비평가와 대중의 사랑을 끊임없이 받는 시들이 포함되어 있다. 이런 서정시들은 당대에 명성을 날리고 있던 엘리엇T.S. Eliot의 대표적인 시 『황무지』가 각주를 빽빽이 붙인 주지주의적인 시였기에 이를 풍자하는 패러디로 쓴 것으로 보인다. |
