Jeong-ga.... colored with Piano.
Jun first learned Pansori, and later the piano.
He became a creator and a performer of “Piano Byeongchang,”
Next he learned Jeong-ga, and he created and performed of another “Piano Byeongchang” along with Jeong-ga.
Byeongchang, by the meaning of its Chinese character, 竝唱, means "sing together."
If the characters, 竝唱, are used, then the meaning could also be "to merge," Traditionally, Pansori was sung solo, but was later combined wiyh Gayageum.
Thus, "Gayageum Byeongchang" was born in which one person plays a string instrument and accompanies the singer.
Geomungo Byeongchang, which is no longer performed, is another genre of Byeongchang born out of similar manner, The modernized version of Byeongchang is now an established part of the Korean vocal music tradition.
In the summer of 2011, Jun was learning Pansori, a part of Jeokbyeokga, “Gunsaseoleum” in his studio. His teacher suggested he try Pansori, while playing the piano since he was also an excellent piano player.
Surprisingly, Jun began to play the melody of Jinyangjangdan, while singing the verse without any hesitation.
After finishing the performance, Jun uttered the word, “Piano Byeongchang.” This was the creation of “Piano Byeongchang.” His performance was the mergence of piano and pansori.
This resulted in Jun’s first record album, “Choi Jun’s Piano Byeongchang,” was released in 2014.
In the winter of 2015, after Jun began to learn Jeong-ga, he wrote a new composition of Piano Byeongchang both for traditional Jeong-ga and new creative Jeong-ga.
Jeong-ga is one of the three great Korean vocal music traditions, along with Pansori and Beompae.
Jeong-ga usually takes the form of male and female singers in rotation, in a formalized form to fit a small orchestral band.
Jeong-ga is divided into the forms of Gagok, Sijo, and Gasa. Jeong-ga, a vocal tune with a mixture of intensity and art, was mostly sung by high-class people, including Yangban, during the Choseon Dynasty. In 2010, it was also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.
This album consists of three traditional Jeong-ga and four creative Jeong-ga, and four piano performances, which contain the unique music world of Jun, who is clear and pure.
Feeling like a minstrel's song, this album opens the world of Jeong-ga, a warm and elegant traditional Korean vocal music.
Choi Jun’s second Piano Byeongchang Album, “Jeong-ga.... colored with Piano” is a new form, arising from Jeong-ga, piano and Korean traditional musical instruments.
