현관문을 열고 집에 들어갔을 때 우리를 바라보며 웃던 엄마와 할아버지의 얼굴이 아직도 떠오른다. 쇼코가 누군지도 모르면서 그저 멀리서 온 손님이라는 이유로 활짝 웃으며 반겨주던 그 모습이. 애정 표현에 서툴고 서로에게 웃어주는 일조차 어색해하던 가족이었기에 쇼코를 반갑게 맞이하던 할아버지와 엄마의 얼굴은 낯설고 우스꽝스럽게만 보였다.
한국 작가의 책인데 누가 봐도 일본 사람 이름인 ‘쇼코’가 들어간 제목에 대해 의구심을 풀어주기 위해 ‘멀리서 온 손님’이란 설명과 함께 주인공 가족이 다소 무뚝뚝하단 특성도 엿볼 수 있는 문장을 고른 것이 아닐까… 추측해본다.
작가 이름도 은영 최가 아니라 한국식 그대로 ‘CHOI EUNYOUNG’ 적혀있다. 도서관에서 ‘Korean’, ‘Korea’ 검색해보며 한국의 흔적(?)을 찾던 내가 발견하고야 만 보물 ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ 감동…
