그 나물에 그 밥인 수많은 패턴책들과 표현 책들이 나와 있지만... 아직도 나는 기본패턴으로 말하지도 못하고 있다는것을 깨닫는순간 이 책을 구입하게 되었다.
이 책의 특징은 여타 패턴책과는 다르게 고리타분한 문법적인 설명보다는...
동사나 명사를 기준으로 뒤 자리에 어떤 덩어리가 오는지에 포커스를 맞춰서 말하는지에 대해 담백하게 설명하고 있다는 점이다. (아래 사진)
예컨대 우리는 보통 패턴책에 단골로 나오는 I'm 으로 시작하는 문장을 우습게 보는데...
사실 I'm~ 이 패턴보다도 더 포커스를 맞춰야 하는 부분은 그 뒤에 나오는 여러 말덩어리였다.
우리는 보통 이 말덩어리들을 그냥 무턱대고 'a member of a golf club' 이라고 통으로 외우지 않았던가? 이러니 입에서 말하기가 제대로 안나오고 말하는 거를 듣는데 무슨말인지 해석하는데 렉이 걸려서 안들리는 거였다.

분명 I'm~ 이라는 패턴으로 시작되는데 무슨말인지 도통 감이 안잡히는 고 내 입에서 이렇게 말이 안나온다면 그것은 우리가 여태껏 I'm~ 만 주구장창 했다는 반증이다

우리가 아무리 패턴을 아무리 외우고 단어를 외워도 입으로 말이 안나오는 건 패턴의 앞부분의 진도빼기에 너무 치중해서 한 의식적인 학습때문만은 아니었을까?
I'm~ 이거 하나만 해도 그 뒤에 나오는 수많은 말덩어리들이 있는데... 이거야말로 바로 진정한 패턴이고 이 패턴들이 충분히 녹아들어가 있어야만 비로소 내 입에서 I'm~으로 내뱉을수 있지 않을까?
덧붙여서 ChatGPT가 만들어준 I'm~과 명사로 시작하고 그 뒤의 나오는 말덩어리(전치사구)를 인위적으로 바꿔서 물어보았다. ChatGPT의 대답은 놀라웠다.

내가 습득해야 했었던 패턴은 I'm~ 이 아니라 그 뒤의 말덩어리, 덩어리들이었고 이 말덩어리들을 자연스럽게 올바로 붙여서 표현하는 사용법이었다.
그리고 내가 이렇게 생각하게 된데에는 ChatGPT와의 대화였었고 그 내용은 아래와 같다. 나는 to로 시작해서 붙여지는 말덩어리들에 대해서 여전히 두려움과 공포를 가지고 있었기때문이다.
