I was looking forward to the weekend. I caught a cold so my mom told me to get an IV injection. I know stress weakens resistance, but it's not easy to control emotion and keep healthy. Anyway I think of reading books as the best pick-me-up. I hope it can help cheer me up this time.
I picked up Mom & Me & Mom because it's the short nonfiction dealt with the mother-daughter relationship. I have read a couple of novels about their attachments recently. I felt outraged by the strong feeling and grotesque description about them at times. Despite the discomfort, I am curious about its nature and power. Whether you like it or not, we can't deny the mysterious power of motherhood love.
Mom & Me & Mom can appear in front of people thanks to the author and her mother's complete lives. Maya Angelou lived a life fully and her mom did it too. It's natural that the chance to tell the own story is not allowed by people who abandon their lives. I don't exactly know until now how hard people endure both physical and mental pain from living. They often accept the unwanted time. I am near tears each time I think it over. 'You also endure such time.'
As I mentioned above, the author 'completed' her life given by God. Life is made up of hells and heavens. She was abandoned by her parents at 2 and then raped at 7. Fortunately she had a great grandmother and big brother who understood her whenever she needed them. She had to fight against the unfair things under the skin of the poor black woman. After all, she lived for a dear life like her mother.
I am very shocked by their attitude toward work and sex. They resumed looking for a job and lover even though their marriage and career life often ended in failures. Where does their energy come from? Can it be all explained by the Black motherhood?
When I read the book, the most interesting thing is about Bailey's end. Maya had a hard time accepting her mother heartily at first and even she called her "Lady". On the contrary, he embraced his mom without any hesitation at the reunion. Besides, her mom hit her in the face so hard that they decided to leave home. Here, they are truly humans. They confessed their wrongdoing and sincerely begged for forgiveness after taking off the family hierarchical titles. It was the scene of growing up together through their relationships.
If so, I'd say we only become a true adult as having and raising babies. We can learn some truth from experiences hurting people and hurt by people. The way to be a real human is based on the interactive relationships. We can be a better man next to lovers. Finding true love is our mission in life to complete. To do it, it is undeniable that we meet loves and lose them until that moment.
Her big brother raised her up as her child, but he was addicted to drugs. He couldn't let the past go because he had the emotional hunger and hate to his mom. He overcame it by marriage, however sadly it didn't last long. We only can be healed by love. Therefore we need someone who holds our hand and is willing to say comforting words to us until death. I'd like to call that kind of love "mom."
When we die, there only the traces of love left. As closing the book, I pray to God for my mother's health and happiness. It reminded me that there are a lot of things I have to be grateful. Thank goodness! |
