The author would like to prove that he is right and that he can prove he is right. However, the thing is that there are things that you cannot simply prove what is right or wrong. Yes, it is possible as the author shows in the book that some weird things are weird things that can be proven wrong. But not everything is. The very existence of God cannot be proven by *any* worldly means if God is the one whom the scriptures describe to be. Even in the Bible, no one is to see God because he or she will die. Therefore, God is hidden in the Universe where we live. So, it would be absurd to prove if God exists within the universe with the things (or methods) within the universe. For example, natural numbers are closed with additions. You cannot possibly find negative numbers only with additions and natural numbers. What if we live in such a world? In such a world where even Science is closed?

I *believe* there are things we cannot understand why or how even with the best science we will ever get.

This book failed in changing my belief.

마이클 셔머라는 작가를 이 책을 통해서 알게 되었다. Skeptic이란 잡지로 꽤 유명한 듯하다. 유튜브를 찾아보니 말발도 상당하다. 모든것을 의심해보는 이 작가가 말한다, 왜 많은 사람들이 신, UFO등을 믿는지, 왜 똑똑하다는 사람들마저도 홀로코스트 부정등에 빠지는지. 버뮤다 삼각지에는 정말 불가사의한 힘이 존재하는지. 외계인들이 정말 납치를 한건지.

일단 위의 모든 내용에 저자가 다 대답을 하는것은 아니다. 외계인에 의한 납치, 신의 존재, 홀로코스트 부정, 등에 대해서 꽤 자세히 설명하기는 한다. 이 것 만으로도 읽는 재미가 있다. 그러나 난 이 책의 전반부, 사람들이 범하기 쉬운 오류에 대해 정리한 부분이 중요하다고 본다. 상당히 많은 수의 일상적인 오류들을 설명한다. 예를 들면, post hoc, ergo propter hoc. 즉 a가 b보다 선행 되었다고해서 a가 b의 원인이 아니라는것. 어제 저녁에 커다란 용의 꿈을 꾸었고 오늘 형수가 임신한것을 알았다고 해서 용의 꿈이 태몽이고 그로인해 임신한 것이 아니라는 것이다. (사실 얼마나 많은 사람들이 태몽의 존재를 당연하게 생각하는가) 또 다른 간단한 예로 어떤 소문이 존재한다고 해서 그것이 꼭 사실이 아니라는 점. (아니 땐 굴뚝에 연기날 일 없다라는 속담이 과연 몇 퍼센트나 사실에 부합할까?)

사람들은 어찌보면 오류를 저지를 수 밖에 없게끔 진화되어왔을 것이다. 그렇다고해서 꼭 오류를 범해야 하는 것은 아니다. 그 당연한 얘기를 이 책은 하고 있고, 그리고 재밌다. 영어 가독성도 나쁘지 않다.
