Holy Thursday

Is this a holy thing to see
In a rich and fruitful land,
Babes reduced to misery,
Fed with cold and usurous hand?

Is that trembling cry a song?
Can it be a song of joy?

이 시집에 등장하는 Holy Thursday라는 작품에서는 화자가 영국이 너무 많은 자녀들을 빈곤에서 살도록 비난하면서 '부유하고 결실을 맺는' 나라라는 것을 스캔들로 간주하고 있다. 사실, 두 번째 구절은 첫 번째 구절을 바로 잡고 있다. 잉글랜드는 그곳에 살고 있는 수많은 가난한 어린이들이 있을 때 결코 '부자 국가'라고 부릴 자격이 없다는 의미이다. 이 아이들은 평온한 환경에서 살아야 하며, 아이들의 척박한 삶은 '영원한 겨울'과도 같은 현실이라고 한다. 다시 말하지만, 마지막 절은 어린이들이가 굶주리는 빈곤 가운데 있어서는 안된다는 뜻이다.
