옥스포드에서 학습자용으로 2008에 새로 나온 유의서 사전이다. 우선 1000쪽의 분량으로 15000이상의 유의어를 비교해 놓았다. 옥스포드 영영사전에서와 같이 영어로 풀이 되어있으며 단어의 의미별로 유의어를 정리하고 패턴과 연어를 같이 참고하도록 되어있다. 또한 풍부한 예문과 주의사항이 세심하게 정리되어 있고 이번에 새로 나와서 인지 cd-rom도 상당히 잘만들어져 있어 오히려 시디에 손이 더 갈듯하다. 영어를 한층더 깊이 공부하는데 꼭필요한 지침서라고 생각한다. 밑에서 보듯이 시디에서 본문 복사도 깔끔하게 되어 유의어를 정리하는데 상당히 도움이된다. NOTE charge or fee? Fee can represent a larger amount of money than charge , especially in the combinations legal fees and school fees . 사실 이 사전을 일반 분들이 구매하기전에 먼저 망설이실꺼다. 가격이 왠만한 일반 영어사전을 상회할뿐만 아니라
굳이 유의어 사전이기 때문에 쉽사리 구매가 결정되지 않기 때문이다. 이 책에 나오는 단어는 총 17,000단어라고 책 표지에 적혀있고.
1만7천 단어이긴한데 여기 나오는 단어들은 대게 난이도가 높은 단어들이다. 여러분들이 생각하는 일반적인 1만7천단어 난이도의 수준이 아니다. 그 점 구매하셨을 때 참고 하셨으면 좋겠고 저처럼 보카수준이 좀 딸리시는 분들은 어려운 유의어들은 참고정도나 학습정도로 보셨으면 좋을 것 같다.
일상 생활에 쓰이기보다는 좀더 문학적이거나 원어민과 대화상황에서 쓰일 수 있는 단어들로 생각이되는 고급단어들이 많다. 여기에 실린 예문들은 옥스포드 답게 훌륭하다 사실 그 점이 사전의 강점인 듯 싶다.
이거를 활용하실 분들은 필자가 봤을때 고급수준인 분들이 사용하기 좋을 사전 같다 이 사전의 단점이라면 콜로케이션 조합도 보너스로 표제어 위에 적어놨는데 보기가 너무 불편하다. 이거는 적응되면 괜찮지 않을까 생각중이다.
총 느낀 점은 유의어 사전으로써의 기능은 확실히 하는 것 같고 구성은 빽빽하게 최대한 많은 내용을 실으려고 한 노력이 보인다. 빨리 이 정도 단어를 유창하게 구사하는 실력자가 되길 기원한다.

유의어 사전이 왜 필요하냐는 사람도 많겠지만 영어공부하며 의외로 많이 필요한게 유의어 사전이다. 정말 단어가 생각나지 않을때는 유의어 사전을 통해서 그 단어를 찾기도 하고 이런저런 문맥에 따라 단어가 쓰이는 그 묘미를 알아갈수있다 우리나라만해도 동음이의어, 유의어 이렇게 많이 나뉘는것처럼 영어도 그런 단어가 참 많다! 최소한 내가 아는 단어들은 유의관계 반어관계를 알아가는것도 심도있는 공부이지않을까 |
