The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane은 Because of Winn-Dixie와 The Tale of Despereaux로 뉴베리 아너를 2번이나 받은 케이트 디카밀로의 작품입니다. 저도 개인적으로 정말 좋아하는 작가이기도 하고, 원서를 어느 정도 읽어본 분들 사이에는 정말 유명한 작가이죠. 뉴베리 아너를 받은 윈딕시나 데스페로에 비해서는 이 책은 상대적으로 덜 알려졌었는데, 이번에 별에서 온 그대라는 드라마에 번역서가 나오면서 원서에 대한 관심도 덩달아 높아진 것 같네요. * 이 책은 기본적으로 아동 문학이지만, 어른들이 보기에도 좋은 내용입니다. 어른들을 위한 동화.. 라고 할까요? 또 이걸 영어 학습이랑 접목시키면 더 탁월한 효과가 생기는데.. ‘아동 문학’ 작품이라 영어 문장이 간결하고 쉽기 때문에 → 영어 원서 읽기에 익숙하지 않은 초보 독자들도 충분히 도전해 볼 만한 책이기 때문입니다. 게다가 독자들이 더욱 쉽게 읽을 수 있도록, 오디오북과 단어장이 패키지로 들어있는 도서가 있습니다! http://www.yes24.com/24/goods/8422864?scode=032&OzSrank=2

이 책을 읽으면서 가장 인상 깊었던 캐릭터는 브라이스. 브라이스를 통해서 우리 사회의 냉정함을 볼 수 있었던 것 같다. 아래는 브라이스와의 가상 인터뷰를 영어로 진행해 본 것이다.
Interviewer: First of all, why did you stole Edward Tulane and gave it to Sarah Ruth? Didn’t you feel guilty or even afraid? Bryce: As soon as I saw the doll, I knew that the doll is here for my sister, Sarah Ruth. So I decided to bring the rabbit for her. I didn’t mean to steal the doll anyway. After I presented the doll to sister, she really loved it. She was very sick so that she rarely smiles but with the doll, she seems to be happy. Surely, I felt guilty and afraid when I take him down secretly. However, for me, my sister’s happiness was more important than any other things at that moment. I cannot wait to see her feeling better. Interviewer: Next question is why did you choose the second method, fix Edward Tulane and give him to doll repairman instead of find another doll repairman? Didn’t you regret your choice? Bryce: I always kept him preciously. Also while I was in crossroad, I never treated Edward carelessly. Actually, that was the best method for him. I do care about him, so I cannot let him die because of me. Maybe I could find another doll repairman but I was not sure that other repairmen will act differently. Kindness cannot exist for empty pocket. When I turn back and go outside of the store, I regret my choice. I thought I can’t stand without Edward. Interviewer: Then what did you think while looking at Edward Tulane on the doll store shelf? Bryce: When I first saw Edward on the doll store shelf, I felt relieved and lonely. First, I felt relieved because he is fixed and safe from the dangers. From now on, he won’t be thrown away again and crash in to twenty-one pieces. On the other hands, I felt lonely, too. Due to the blank space made by Edward, I greatly missed him and felt lonely. I really wanted to go back to time when I was able to be with Edward. Interviewer: Lastly, does Edward Tulane give any influence or bring some changes into your life? Bryce: Edward Tulane gave great influence to me although he was just a visitor in my life. Firstly, he gave me and my sister a hope. While living with him, I felt very happy and so do Sarah. We believed one day, everything will be fine. Also, he was very important being for me. Edward was just used as a way to earn money at first. However, as the time we spent together being longer and longer, Edward become one of the most important one to me. If I had been stay together with him up to now, maybe my life could go different way.

별그대에 나왔던 바로 그 책! 별그대를 볼 때에 김수현의 나레이션을 들으면서 저게 실제로 있는 이야기인가? 했었는데ㅎㅎ 이게 책으로 있다는 것을 알고나서도 계속 살까 말까 고민하다가~ 이렇게 확! 사버렸네요~ 어차피 읽을거, 이왕이면 원서로 읽자 싶어서 원서로 이렇게 구매했답니다. 그런데 역시 동화라서 그런지 글씨도 큼지막~하구 읽기 되게 쉬워요! ㅋㅋ영어로된 전공서적들만 보다가 이거 보니까... 막막 마음에 힐링을 해주는 느낌..ㅋㅋ 한창 영어 공부할 나이의 어린 아이들이 읽어두 참 좋을 것 같다는 생각이 드네요! 사길 정말 잘한 것 같아요!ㅎㅎ |

나는 별그대도 보지 않았고 김수현 전지현에도 관심이 없지만 단지 동화를 보고 싶은데 원서로 보면서 영어공부할까해서 구매했네욧 생각보다 쉽고 잘 읽혀서 좋았습니다 그런데 원서고 싼 값이다 보니 가벼운 제본판이고요 그림도 아주 조금 들어가 있는데 흑백입니다 컬러판 원하시는 분은 다른 책 사셔야할듯 저는 가볍고 단출해서 좋았습니다
