# 읽고 나서.
북튜버들 사이에 한동안 핫했던 (이라고 믿고 싶은) 책이어서 굉장히 관심이 갔다. 정말 왜!! 나는 이 책의 장르가 미스터리인 줄 알았던 것인가?! 누가 나에게 그런 잘못된 정보를 심어준 것인가?!
7번 결혼한 할리우드 슈퍼 무비 스타 에블린 휴고가 진짜 사랑했던 사람은 누구인가?
이 설명만 듣고, 마지막 반전을 기다리고 기다렸는데, 뭐 반전이 있긴 있었지만, 이건 미스터리가 아니잖아! 로맨스 소설 혹은 성장 소설? 이잖아! ㅠㅠ
성공한 레전드 영화배우 에블린 휴고가 자선활동으로 자신의 드레스들을 경매에 내놓는다. 이에 관해 인터뷰를 할 사람으로 그녀는 Vivant라는 잡지의 Monique 를 '지명'한다. 잡지사의 말단 기자를 지명한 것부터 이상한데, 에블린은 그녀에게 자신의 자서전을 직접 써서 책으로 내라고 제안한다. 모든 권한은 그녀에게 주겠다면서. 그리고 그녀는 불우한 가정에서 태어나 할리우드의 전설 같은 여배우가 될 때까지 그녀의 이야기를 들려준다.
할리우드로 가기 위한 티켓으로 몸을 내어주고 결혼하고, 할리우드 스타 및 감독들이 자주 간다던 근처 카페/식당에서 매일매일 죽치고 앉아있다가 기회를 잡는다. 마지막까지 진정한 친구였던 감독 Harry를 만나 작은 역에서 시작해 그녀를 크게 만든 영화 출현 기회를 잡는다. 그리고 인기를 위해, 그리고 사랑했다고 믿었던 미남 배우와 결혼한다 (그러기 위해 이전 남편과 이혼한다).
처음부터 끝까지, 자신이 원하는 것을 위해 7번의 가짜 결혼을 한 에블린의 이야기다.
그리고 그녀가 진정 사랑한 사람은?
아직까지 불편하기만 한 주제가 있어 거부감이 일기 때문인 건지, 아니면 원하는 것, 성공을 위해서라면 아무렇지 않게 자신을 내어주는 그녀가 보기 불편해서인 건지, 굉장히 힘들게 읽었다.
개인적으로 가족, 가정이 굉장히 중요하다고 믿는다. 차라리 혼자 살지언정, 그 가정을 처음부터 끝까지 거짓으로 세우면서까지 얻고 싶은 성공이 있을까.
글 자체는 잘 쓰였고, 흥미도 있었지만, 여튼, 불편했다.

This is something that everyone should know about stars. We like to be told we are adored, and we want you to repeat yourself. Later in my life, people would always come up to me and say, "I'm sure you don't want to hear me blabbering on about how great you are," and I always say, as if I'm joking, "Oh, one more time won't hurt." But the truth is, praise is just like an addiction. The more you get it, the more of it you need just to staty even.
"Celia, if you're going to be as big as you clearly want to be, you need to learn two things."
"And what are they?"
"First, you have to push people's boundaries and not feel bad about it. No one is going to give you anything if you don't ask for it. You tried. You were told no. Get over it."
"And the second thing?"
"When you use people, be good at it."
"Haven't you been listening to a single thing I've told you? I loved Celia, but I also, before her, loved Don. In fact, I'm positive that if Don hadn't turned out to be a spectacular asshole, I probably never would have been capable of falling in love with someone else at all. I'm bisexual. Don't ignore half of me so you can fit me into a box, Monique. Don't do that."
There are no more mountains to climb. I spent my life hiding so no one would knock me off the mountain. Well, you know what? I'm done hiding. Let them come and get me. They can throw me down a wall as far as I'm concerned. I'm signed on to do one last movie over at Fox later this year, and then I'm done.
"No," she told me. "Because they are just husbands. I am Evelyn Hugo. And anyway, I think once people know the truth, they will be much more interested in my wife."
