이 작품은 Cranford란 이름으로 출판된 책에다가 다음의 세 작품 - My Lady Ludlow, Mr. Harrison's Confessions, The Last Generation in England - 을 합한 2007년도판 BBC 드라마이다. 이 작품들을 잇기 위해, 세가지 색깔별로 카드를 만들어 이야기를 짜냈다는 에피소드가 DVD속 메이킹 필름속에 나온다. 그래서 원작에서 등장하는 인물이 안나오기도 하고, 결혼 상대가 바뀌기도 하고, 죽음의 원인도 다르기도 한다. 하지만, 이러함은 원작의 핵심을 건드리지않는다.

엘리자베스 개스켈의 문체는 같은 동시대를 산 빅토리안들중에서도 부드러움 30% + 진지, 딱딱함 40% + 풍부한 표현과 유머 30% 정도 (음, 제인 오스틴의 경우에는, 풍부한 표현과 유머가 70%, 찰스 디킨스는 장황하고 풍부한 표현이 70%)로, 드라마로 바뀌었을때의 재미가 훨씬 더 높다. 재미없다는 소리가 아니라, 뭐 상대적으로 (연출자들도 언급하던데) 찰스 디킨즈의 진지함, 브론테의 열정, 오스틴의 재치와 달리 이 모든 것을 조합한 조화로운 것.
초기의 빅토리아 시대 영국대륙에서 북서쪽의 첼셔의 너츠퍼드를 모델로한 가상의 마을 크랜포드에는, 집을 가진 이들은 대개가, 아니 전부다가 여성이다. 새로 마을에 부부가 이사를 올 경우, 대체로 남자들은 도시에 일이 있다건가 바쁘던가 하는 이유로 마을에 머무르지않는다. 푸하하, 아마조나스에 비해 상대를 배려해주는 듯한 규칙이 엄격한 이 여성들은 마차가 부딪히는 사건 등이 매우 센세이셔널한 사건으로 온갖 부산을 떠는데, 이제 늙은 닥터 모건의 조카인 젊은 의사 프랭크 해리슨이 마을에 도착하자 난리가 난다. 해리슨의 파트는 [Cranford]가 아닌 [Mr. Harrison's Confessions]에서 가져왔다.
이지적이고 bossy한 데브라 젠킨스과 소심하고 언니를 따르는 매티 젠킨스의 집에 살러온 젊은 처자 메리, 프랭크를 짝사랑하는 캐롤라인, 우편보다 더 빠른 미스 폴, 방종한 아들때문에 재산이 줄어드는 대저택의 러드로부인, 집사인 카터, 그의 손에 잡혔다가 인정을 받는 소년 해리 (러드로부인과 해리 등은 [My Lady Ludlow]에서 가져왔다) , 젠킨슨 자매네 앞집에 이사온 캡틴 브라운의 둘째딸 제시 ([오만과 편견]에선 날나리 리디아로 나왔다), 소를 매우 사랑하는 포리스터 부인 등등.
도시사람이나 현대인의 눈에는 정말 소소한 사건들이 대단한 파장을 일으키는 것이 어쩌면 안쓰럽지만, '변화'라는 단어에 눈동자가 1.5배 커지고 거부감을 느끼면서, 바다건너 대륙의 혁명에 대해서 두려움을 느끼는 이 사람들을 보노라면, 실상은 기절초풍할 사건이나 사진과 영상에 대해 흔들림없는 우리들이 오히려 덜 인간적이 된게 아닐까 싶다.
"남자들이 뭘 알겠니? 쯧쯔"하거나, "우리 아빠를 봐서 알아요. 남자들이 그렇죠 뭘"하면서 모여있는 긴 드레스의 아마조네스. ㅋㅋㅋ
첫번째 청혼을 거절했음에도 아네모네 -꽃말은 영원한 사랑 - 를 보낸 것을 보고 "you're quite a dark horse"라고 감탄하는 대사.
마틸다라는 예쁜 이름을 다른 이들은 다 줄여서 매티라고 불렀지만, 언제나 마틸다라고 불렀던 데보라.
계급에 따른 공부의 무용론이 대세에, 공부하기를 원하는 소년과 아이스크림을 주면서 기쁨을 느끼는 엄숙하고 무서운 남자.
딸의 장례를 치뤄준 고마움에 젠킨슨양이 필요로했던 나무 석탄집게를 깎아주고, 십시일반으로 비싼 초를 모아 수술을 돕고, 혼자 장례식장에 보낼 수 없어 다들 쳐다보는데 따라가주고, 체면치레보단 젊은 목수의 팔을 살리기 위해 고군분투하고, 파산한 친구를 위해 자기돈이나마 모으는 등, 감동의 연속이다. 사랑은 남자와 여자가 만나 화학적 반응의 불꽃만은 아니다. 감정은 있지만, 거절해야 하는 아픔을 갖고서 자기옆을 걸어간 다른 여인의 아픔을 위해 같이 울어주고 기대어주는 여인을 사랑할 수 있는 것이고, 돈이 없어 다른 물건을 훔치지만 마음은 착한 아이를 위해 페인트칠을 시키면서 단어공부를 가르치고 아껴주는, 하지만 겉은 거친 아저씨의 가는 길을 위해 눈물을 참으면서 마지막으로 시를 읽어주는 아이의 모습을 보면서 '희노애락'의 참 의미를 깨닫는다.
I have hid my feelings– fearing they should do me wrong, Saying– doest thou love me? Weeping– I have loved thee long. What is this? His eyes are heavy– think not they are glazed with wine, Go to him, it is thy duty– Kiss him– take his hand in thine. Cursed be the social wants that sin against the strength of youth! Tennyson’s “Locksley Hall" (에피소드3, 자신의 너무 늦은 사랑에 슬픔에도 마틸다는 마사의 사랑을 위해 원칙을 깬다. 자신이 다하지 못한 사랑을 그녀가 다할 수 있도록 ㅜㅠ)
엘리자베스 개스켈의 작품에서는 보다 사회적인 이슈가 주제가 되지만, 이 작품만큼은 제인 오스틴의 그것처럼 부드러운 풍자적인 수준으로 가볍게 즐겨도 될 것 같다. 철도가 놓이는 자리에 마치 산의 곡선이 끝긴 것처럼 화면을 꽉채우는 모습을 보면서, 농업위주의 시대가 산업혁명의 시대로 넘어가는 상징으로 보이고, 교육과 혁명, 계급과 빈부의 격차 등의 메세지가 쉽게 넘어가지는 않지만...
엘리자베스 개스켈의 자전적인 이야기가 반영되어있다. 실제로 아버지가 새엄마와 재혼하자 이모가 사는 너츠퍼드로 와서 살았고, 오빠는 인도에서 실종되었고 하는 등. 게다가 이 작품은 [Cranford]에서의 비극을 뛰어넘고 (원작에선 누가 죽었는지 알면 충격받으실듯), 엘리자베스 개스켈 자신의 비극마저 해피엔딩으로 바꾸어놓았다. 원작을 읽어서 비교되지만, 이 각본은 엄청나게 잘 만들어졌다. 원작의 대사없는, 여러군데에서 언급되는 이야기를 하나의 장면에서 인물의 특성이 너무나 잘 들어나면서도 원작에 충실하게 구성해놓은 것을 보면 감탄스럽다. 하지만, 가끔은 경쾌한 음악이 들어갔으면 무척 좋겠다는 생각이 든다. 부분부분의 화면은 정지시켜서 보고싶을 정도로 의상, 머리스타일 (크랜포드의 이들은 그시대의 유행에는 관심이 없었다지만...요즘의 상투머리가 등장하는 것은 참 신기하다), 건축물, 집안 구조 (어찌나 소인국적인 사이즈인지, 일반인의 침대는 정말 딱 한사람 누우면 잠꼬대하다 떨어지기 십상이겠다) 등을 지켜보는 재미 또한 쏠쏠하다.
보면서 다섯여섯번은 훌쩍거리며 울었고, 서너번은 흐뭇하게 웃었고, 등장인물들의 아름다운 마음에 마음이 찡했다. 뭔가 찌뿌드드하고 우울하신 분은 보시면, 다시 삶의 의욕이 뿌쩍 뿌쩍 나실 듯 싶다. 매우 아름답고 대단한 작품이다.

The younger sister of Deborah. "We all of us love Miss Matty. And I somehow think we are all of us better when she is near us" (Mary Smith). Gaskell says of Matty: "Her own rebellious spirit was crushed long ago and she remains loyal to her sister as the true arbiter of taste."
Mary Smith (Lisa Dillon)
Very early 20s. Visitor from Manchester. Says of herself that she is "indiscreet and incautious". Stays with the Jenkyns sisters. Her mother died when she was eight and her father remarried and has a second family. Her mother grew up in Cranford alongside the Amazons.
Clara Smith (Finty Williams)
Mary Smith's step-mother, who is only ten years older than Mary. With four young children at home, Clara is determined to find a suitable bachelor for the troublesomely independent Mary.
Martha (Claudie Blakely)
Aged 22. Servant to the Jenkyns sisters. A "rough, honest-looking country girl" from a farm. Courted by Jem Hearne.
Jem Hearn (Andy Buchan)
Martha's follower (boyfriend). A joiner. "Six foot one in his stocking feet."
Rev Hutton (Alex Jennings)
The vicar of Cranford – successor to Mr Jenkyns (Deborah and Matty's father). A widower with four children – Sophie, Helen, Lizzie and Walter.
Sophy Hutton (Kimberley Nixon)
Aged 20. The vicar's eldest daughter and surrogate mother to her three younger siblings since her mother died six years earlier. Has a gentle and loving manner with children and becomes a good friend of Mary Smith's. Love interest of Dr Harrison.
Helen Hutton (Hester Odgers)
Aged 14. Sophy's middle sister.
Lizzie Hutton (Rosy Byrne)
Aged 12. Sophy's youngest sister.
Walter Hutton (Haydon Downing)
Aged six. Sophy's adored younger brother, whom she has raised since he was a baby.
Dr Frank Harrison (Simon Woods)
Late 20s. Newly qualified doctor, trained at Guy's in London. Son of Dr Morgan's cousin, newly arrived in Cranford, he sets the ladies hearts a-flutter.
Dr Morgan (John Bowe)
Cranford's dapper doctor. Runs the major practice in the area. Takes Dr Harrison as his partner.
Mrs Rose (Lesley Manville)
Late 30s. Newly widowed. Her husband was a doctor and friend of Dr Morgan. Sets up lodgings as housekeeper for Dr Harrison.
Dr Jack Marshland (Joe McFadden)
Late 20s. Dr Harrison's friend from London. Lively and fun and a great prankster.
Miss Augusta Tomkinson (Deborah Findlay)
Age 55. Older sister of Caroline, whom she has brought up since their parents died. Has a surprising amount of money, though very frugal.
Caroline Tomkinson (Selina Griffiths)
Aged 35. The indulged younger sister of Miss Tomkinson. Determined not to stay a spinster like her sister (and the rest of the Amazons). Sets her sights on Dr Harrison.
Thomas Holbrook (Michael Gambon)
About 70. Miss Matty's suitor from her youth. Though educated, not considered by her family as suitable husband. A "tall, thin Don Quixote looking man". Cousin twice removed from Miss Pole. Yeoman farmer with own estate in Woodley, just outside Cranford.
Miss Pole (Imelda Staunton)
Cousin of Thomas Holbrook. A sort of roving ambassador for the Amazons and voluble disseminator of local news. Her peripatetic nature means she is never far from any unfolding incident. Mary Smith says of her: "We looked on her as a kind of prophetess, from the knack of foreseeing things before they came to pass – although she did not like to disturb her friends by telling them of her foreknowledge."
The Hon Mrs Jamieson (Barbara Flynn)
Sister-in-law to the late Earl of Glenmire. A great snob. Has a beloved dog, Carlo.
Mrs Forrester (Julia McKenzie)
Widow of a Major, with very limited means. She has one beloved cow, Bessie, which she loves as a daughter.
Sir Charles Maulver (Greg Wise)
Local aristocrat, magistrate and director of the railway company. He moves Captain Brown to Cranford. Hires Captain Brown, who served under him in the Army and saved his life.
Captain Brown (Jim Carter)
Around 60. Father of Miss Brown (ill) and Jessie. Military man. "His excellent masculine common sense had gained him an extraordinary place as authority among the Cranford ladies." Mary Smith writes: "We did not know what to make of a man who would speak of poverty as if it was not a disgrace."
Jessie Brown (Julia Sawalha)
Aged 28. "Twenty shades prettier than her older sister," she was a self-sacrificing nursemaid to her mother and her sister. Courted by Major Gordon. "I do not know whether she was pretty or not; but I liked her face, and so did everybody, and I do not think she could help her dimples. She had something of her father's jauntiness of gait and manner."
Major Gordon (Alistair Petrie)
"A tall, fine, frank-looking man of 40." An officer and friend of Captain Brown, he has been in love with Jessie Brown for years. An earlier proposal was turned down because Jessie had to look after her ailing mother and sister. He soon returns to Cranford in hopes of winning her a second time.
Lady Ludlow (Francesca Annis)
Late 60s. Reigning aristocrat of the area. Lives at Hanbury Court. "She was very small in stature, and very upright." Driven by a rigid sense of duty, can be compassionate but represents the status quo and see change as a danger to the natural order of things. Crosses swords with Mr Carter about reforms to her estate. Longs in vain to see her only surviving son, who lives in Italy.
Mr Carter (Philip Glenister)
Land agent to Lady Ludlow. Son of a farmer, a man who has made his way after managing to get an education. A reformer, who nevertheless respects the old order. Passionate about free education for the working classes. Very direct. Sensing the potential of the 10-year-old Harry Gregson he becomes determined to educate him, even against the express wishes of Lady Ludlow.
Miss Galindo (Emma Fielding)
A milliner and friend to Lady Ludlow. "Apt to speak more strongly than accurately." Though the daughter of a baronet, she has no money and is forced to work for a living.
Harry Gregson (Alex Etel)
Son of a notorious poacher, 10-year-old Harry is desperate for knowledge. Mr Carter recognises the boy's ability and secretly tutors him to read and write. When Lady Ludlow discovers this, Harry's world falls apart.
Job Gregson (Dean Lennox Kelly)
Harry's father. A notorious local poacher and ne'er-do-well who lives in poverty with his family in a wretched hovel on the edge of the Hanbury Estate.
Mr Johnson (Adrian Scarborough)
Cranford's newly elected mayor and ambitious owner of Johnson's Universal Stores, the main shop in town – and the main gathering point for all the ladies of the town.

솔직히 엔딩은 다소 억지스럽게 느껴졌다. 해피엔딩인것은 좋지만,그것이 다소는 비현실적이고도 작위적인 느낌(인도에 있던 남동생의 귀향은 눈에 거슬릴 정도였다.....모슬린을 들고 몇십년만에 할아버지가 되서 나타나다니....horrible하다고나 할까??? 내 시각이 냉소적인것인지도 모르겠지만.....)이 들었던 것이다. 하지만, 얽히고설킨 인물들간의 갈등과 애증이 적당히 봉합된 부분에선 나쁘지 않았다. 이 작품의 백미는 전체적인 인물 군상들의 자잘한 에피소드를 꼽을수 있겠다. 특히 고양이가 우유에 담궈둔 레이스를 삼키자 수단방법 가리질 않고, 그 레이스를 다소 찾는 이야기는 상당히 충격적이었다. 얌전한 부인들이 그렇게나 과격한 방법으로 목적을 성취해낸데는 그 엄청난 추진력과 실행력에 박수를 보내고 싶었다. 게다가 장화까지 사용하는 독특한 발상은 상당히 창의적이란 생각마져 들었다. 두번째로 인상적인 것은 총각 의사를 둘러싼 과부와 노처녀의 과대망상을 꼽을수 있겠다. 이미 맘을 준 여인이 따로 있는데, 난데없이 약혼녀를 자처하는 두 여인네때문에 적잖은 타격을 입으면서도 파렴치한으로 매도되는 그의 처지가 딱하기만 했는데, 결국 극적으로 위기를 넘겨 새삼 소중한 사랑을 획득한느 그의 모습이 보기 좋았다. 상당히 수선스럽고, 수다스럽고, 고집스런 마을 아줌마들의 좌충우돌한 일상사들이 때로는 냉소적인 시각으로 비쳐지기도 했지만, 난처한 처지에 있는 친구를 돕고자 나서며 그녀의 자존심을 지켜주기위해 고민하고, 더 많이 도와주지 못하는 것을 진심으로 안타까워하는 모습은 맘을 훈훈하게 해 주었다. 무척 흥미로운 bbc tv시리즈였다. ebs에서 방송하는 것을 얼핏 보긴했지만, 정규방송을 챙겨보는 것이 현실적으로 어려운데다, 광고다 편성이다 해서 거기에 맞추다보면 결국 좋은 방송도 쉬이 놓치게 되는데, dvd를 장만한 덕분에 맘껏 이 작품을 음미할수 있을것 같다. 한번은 가볍게 보고, 이다음엔 엄마 모시고 더 느긋하게 보고, 또 한참 지나서 기억이 가물가물할때 또 즐감해야겠다. ^^ |
