한 챕터를 읽고 나서 연습문제가 있다. 그림이 컬러풀하고 2페이지마다 4분의 1 가량을 차지하고 있어 빽빽해 보일 수도 있었던 본문을 읽기가 좀 편하다. 탐정 이야기이니만큼 쉬운 영어로 표현해놓았지만 재미있었다.

교육용으로도 아주 좋다. 스펠링은 영국식이다.

단어 뜻이 옆에 영영사전식으로 씌어있어서 나중에 영영사전을 읽을 수 있는 기초를 닦을 수 있다.

wlking stick - Then the tall man tried to hit the young man with his walking stick.

advertisement - Did Mr Baker put an advertisement in the newspaper about his hat and goose?

intelligent - The owner of this hat is an intelligent man.

Countess - This is the Countess of Morcar's blue diamond.

disappear - It disappeared a week ago.

jewel - It's a very expensive jewel.

assistant manager - James Ryder, the assistant manager of the hotel, told the court: 'I took Horner to the Countess's room but then I went away for some time. When I came back, Homer wasn't there, and I found the open box, with the jewel in it, on the table next to the bed.'

High Court - The case goes to the High Court next week.

ch. 3

innocent - Is that young man Horner innocent after all?

pub - I got that bird at The Alpha, a pub near the British Museum.

ch 6

arrest - When the police arrested Horner, I left the hotel with the diamond in my pocket.

solution - We found the solution to the crime and that makes me happy.

witness - Without him, the police have no witness to say Horner was the tief.
