I hadn't had any knowledge about the author or this novel when I decided to buy this book a couple of weeks ago. All I did know was Pompeii was the unfortunate Roman city which disappeared with the eruption of the volcano, Mt.Vesuvius. Then, what made me click the 'buy' button? I liked the color and design of the book cover. And I thought of the Pompeii Relics Exhibition held in Busan almost a decade ago. I talked to myself "Maybe it's not a bad idea to peek at the old days in a foreign country."

It didn't take two pages for POMPEII to get hold of my fixed attention. The amazing description of aqueducts, the young engineer's friction with the older overseer, and the unbelievable, making-my-whole-body-shudder execution of an innocent slave gripped me so tightly that I couldn't let it go.

A tasty dose of politics involved with good guys and bad guys, and the disgruntled Mother Nature!

Another (probably) unintended incentive of this book - You would be kindly instructed the process of an erupting volcano. You might be knowledgable and have things to talk about it. Give it a shot!

A.D.79년 폭발한 베수비우스 화산이 폼페이라는 멋진(짐작컨대) 도시를 삼켜버렸다.

화산이 폭발하기 이틀 전부터 화산이 폭발한 다음날까지의 4일을 시간대별로 기록한 이야기이다.

물론 소설로써, 도시의 수로를 담당하는 기사 아틸리우스가 우연히 한 노예의 죽음에 연루되게 되면서 이야기가 시작된다.

처음에는 단순히 도시에 물을 대는 일로 시작했지만, 결국 화산이 폭발하게 되면서 큰 사건을 대하는 다양한 사람들의 반응을 엿볼 수 있다.

책은 다소 두껍고, 솔직히 내가 많이 관심있어하는 분야가 아니기에 지루하게 느껴지는 면이 없지는 않았다.

하지만, 집필을 위해 필자가 보여준 지질학과 화산에 대한 깊이있는 지식이 놀라울 따름이었다.

작품에 묻어나는 코렐리우스와의 이야기가 다소 건조하게 느껴질 수 있는 이야기에 활력을 불어넣는다고 볼 수 있겠다.

더운 여름, 무언가에 푹 빠지고 싶은 사람에게 추천할만한 책이다.
