| This is quite simply as good as middle grade fiction gets. It’s a very deserving winner of the Newbery Medal, as it pulls us into the lives of an immigrant family and the struggles of a young girl trying to find her place in a school we’re popularly and money carry weight, and she has neither. At home she has to deal with strict parents and the idea that grandparents grow old in a way that we’re not always ready to except. This is what you want your child to read. |

이 책은 ＜머시 수아레즈, 기어를 바꾸다＞라는 제목으로 번역되어 한글로 출판됐었는데 무척 재미있게 읽은 책이었다. 사춘기 여자아이의 복합적인 감정이 섬세하게 표현되었고 주변 인물들의 감정과 행동도 세밀하게 묘사되어 읽는 내내 즐거웠다. 역시 뉴베리 수상작답다는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 이런 표현들을 영어로 느끼고 싶어서 원서를 구입했는데 한글판도 두껍다고생각했는데 영어판도 꽤 두꺼웠다. 매일 조금씩 읽고 있는데 아이들 대상으로 쓰여진 책이어서 그런지 많이 어렵진 않다. 10대 도서이지만 어른들도 읽어보면 좋을 거 같다. |
