# 읽고 나서.

켄 폴릿의 20세기 3부작의 첫 번째 권을 읽었다. 1911에서 세계 제 1차대전이 끝나 1923년까지의 이야기. 어떻게 아무도 원하지 않았던 전쟁이 시작되었고, 어떻게 수많은 젊은이들이 죽었으며, 어떻게 혁명이 시작되었는지에 대한 이야기다.

보통 소설을 읽으면 주인공을 따라 감정이입을 하게 마련이다. 하지만 작가님 참으로 영리하시게도, 주요 인물들을 전쟁 참가자들, 각국에 분배하셨다. 그 주인공들을 중심으로 각 나라의 전쟁 상황이 보여진다. 이쪽 등장인물을 응원하다보면, 바로 상대편 진영에 누군가 다른 메인 캐릭터가 죽어나가게 되는 상황. 심지어 당찬 여성 캐릭터인 모드와 그녀의 비밀 결혼상대인 독일의 월터는 각국이 대치한 상황에서 마음을 졸이게 한다. 누군가를 '이기도록' 자연스럽게 응원하기 마련인데, 전쟁에서 누군가 이긴다는건 누군가 진다는 것이고, 이긴나라 뿐만 아니라 진 나라에서 수많은 너와 나 같은 사람들이 덧없이 죽어간다는 이야기다. 여기에 누가 승자고 누가 패자가 있을까..?

사회적 하위 계층에 있지만 할말 하는 에설과 빌리, 어릴적 황제에게 어머니가 죽임을 당하는 것을 눈으로 목격한 러시아의 그리고리와 레브 형제들. 아래에서 치고 올라오는 혁명의 다른 모습이 어떻게 진행될지, (역사가 스포일러이긴 하지만 역사를 잘 모르는 나는) 다음 이야기가 기대된다. 안타까운 방향으로 흘러가는 것이 보이는 인물들도 그들을 그렇게 몰아간건 결국 권력자들, 사회, 인간의 욕심이 아니었을까 하는 생각이 들게 하기도 한다.

빠져 읽을 수 밖에 없는 이야기. 다음권이 기대된다.
