It's like a movie such as Goodwill Hunting or Finding Forrester in a way that a teacher(Laura Bates) meets a student(Larry Newton) who serves a life sentence without a possibility of bail and in another way that the both have a chance to grow themselves mentally being affected by each other. An article I came across yesterday was about a debate group of prisoners that won against the group of Harvard Uni. That reminded me of this book that I read a month ago in my commuting time. I believe any thing's got a bilateral side and in that sense the prisoners have an advantage in terms of having time to focus on one subject and think it over compared to Uni students who have many subjects going around for them to catch up. Through the book as well as the article, I got to think that it's more important to concentrate on a few subjects and dig them deeply other than to learn things broadly. Also, personal experience will be a great help to understand the literature and other sorts of art as they are supposed to express the specific emotion, feeling and life. Like the saying 'To know is one thing, to teach is another.' It seems to me that 'To learn is one thing, to understand is another.' and I would need to narrow down my broad range of reading. Well, if I knew what I really want to do, that wouldn't be a problem. Noticed there is a translation version: |
