| This is a brilliant combination of careful scientific exposition and fierce polemic. The author is a trained scientist, and a world-renowned expert on lizards, on which subject she has published many scientific papers (originally as John Roughgarden, more recently as Joan). In other words, on biological matters she knows what she is talking about, and has lots of credibility. She is also transgender, so when it comes to human diversity she also knows what she is talking about. The book explores a whole range of topics around sex and gender diversity in humans and animals. The material is fascinating, little known to most people, and well presented. The author makes the topics accessible to any educated person. You don't need to be a trained scientist to understand this book, though some background in biology would certainly help. |
