1935년에 미니애폴리스에서 태어나 1965년에 인디애나대학에서 중세과학사로 박사학위를 취득했으며, 그후 미시간대학을 거쳐 위스콘신대학에서 정년퇴직할 때까지 ‘과학사학과’ 교수로 활동했다. 현재 위스콘신대학의 힐데일 명예교수(Hildale Emeritus Professor)로 재직하고 있다. Theories of Vision from al-Kindi to Kepler(1976)에서 번역된 『서양과학의 기원들』에 이르는 많은 책을 썼고, Science in the Middle Ages(University of Chicago Press, 1978), God and Nature: Historical Essays on the En-counter between Christianity and Science(University of California Press, 1986), Reappraisals of the Scientific Revolution(Cambridge University Press, 1990) 등을 편집했으며, ‘케임브리지 과학사 시리즈’(총 8권, 2003～ )의 편집책임자로 활동했다. 1999년에는 과학사 분야의 노벨상인 ‘사튼 메달’을 받았다.
