침례교회 목사의 아들로 태어나 미시간 크랜브룩 대학교를 졸업했으며, 예일 대학에서 석사학위를, 뉴욕 유니온 신학대학원에서 박사학위를 받았다. 1990년부터 콜게이트 로체스터 크로저 신학교의 조직신학 교수로 재직 중이다. 지은 책으로 Incarnation and Imagination: A Christian Ethic of Ingenuity(Fortress Press, 2008), Theology That Matters(Fortress Press, 2006), Deceiving the Devil: Atonement, Abuse, and Ransom(Pilgrim Press, 1998) , 『놀이 Playing』등이 있다.
